In the early part of her career, elegant Mai Asada paved the way for her little sister Mao as the younger Asada tore through the novice ranks. Not many noticed what an excellent skater Mai herself was be
coming. She had a strong background in ballet and incorporated it into her skating.
While her sister was dominating junior skating, Mai concentrated on modelling and won a Japanese "Top Model" reality TV show. Returning to skating full time, Mai became a top flight performer. She competed in the Junior Grand Prix final in 2006, and was named to Japan's senior 'A' team for the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons, with Grand Prix assignments. Mai also performed at many ice shows, where her artistic flair was allowed to showcase itself more fully. In 2008-09, Mai was not a member of the national "A" team, but successfully worked her way through regional and sectional competitions in Japan en route to a 15th-place finish at the Nationals.
Mai plans on skating in 2009-10, but does not have any assigned international events as yet. She will no doubt be busy as she continues to appear in promotions and TV commercials, often alongside her younger sister. We at Japan Skates have met Mai several times in person and hope to interview her one day. Mai is familiar with Japan Skates and is thrilled to be featured here. She is a most humble and friendly individual, and we wish her all the best in her career endeavours.
